SERIES EIGHT
What It's All About
Throughout time women have been excluded from the world of professional music and especially composing. Those few who succeeded in the compositional world were marginalised, forbidden to write certain types of music and had their reputations questioned.
This series looks at the lives of some female composers from the Medieval to the present day and traces their journeys, the sacrifices they had to make and the exquisite music they wrote.

Notation
For 4000 years there was no musical notation, until a monk named Guido changed this in about 1000 AD. In this class we trace music’s development from a time without formal notation to its impact on music after its invention.
1
Opera
Opera was invented by a group of dilettantes in Florence in 1598. From its inception it has been used as a voice for the aristocracy, the oppressed and the liberated, inspired revolution and even started one.
2
Equal Temperament
Musicians, composers, scientists and instrument makers worked for hundreds of years to manipulate sound to make our concept of tonality different from all other music. How and why did they do this?
3
Piano
The piano was invented about 300 years ago. There were keyboard instruments before this time but the piano’s impact on the musical world has been likened to the invention of the steam engine in the industrial world.
4
Emancipation & Music
